How this is estimated
  • Each time open interest rises on an exchange, the rise is taken as new positions opened at that moment's price.
  • Each rise is spread equally across the leverage levels the exchange's own published leverage tiers allow, with that tier's maintenance margin. That gives a liquidation price for the longs below the entry and for the shorts above it.
  • When open interest falls, the levels shrink in proportion. A level is removed once the price crosses it.
  • Open interest held before the model started has an unknown entry price, so it is not drawn.
  • Exchanges do not publish each position's leverage or entry price, so this is a model of where liquidations could sit, not observed data.
